Solar Worship

[Those on] earth come from your hand as you made them. When you have dawned they live. When you set they die; You yourself are lifetime, one lives by you.
-Great Hymn to the Aten
The sun has always been a source of inspiration to mankind. This inspiration may manifest in religious beliefs, as artistic or literary muse, or as mythical omnipotent figures. Regardless of the form in which it influences a society, the consistency of the sun’s attraction to mankind throughout history is powerfully clear.

This website intends to give an overview of the historical importance of the sun in some of it’s many guises: as life-giver, muse, religious symbol and object of cult reverence. Harnessing solar energy is not just a contemporary phenomenon – the sun has been energising us as reflective, creative people for centuries! In the timelessness of the sun’s appeal to man, we can find renewed evidence of mankind’s common love of nature and the flourishing of life, in mankind’s fundamental attraction to cyclicality and repetition, as well as – on a darker note – our relentless interest in the possession of power.
