Ancient Texts

Mankind’s fascination with the sun has long manifested in written and oral culture. In this section of the site, I’ve pulled a selection of my favourite texts which are inspired by the sun, sunlight and the symbolism of the sun. These texts draw on different ancient cultures, encompassing Greek, Egyptian and Biblical passages. As well as representing varying civilisations, these anicnet texts display mankind’s complex relationship with the sun and solar worship. For example, in Homer’s ‘Hymn 31 to Helius’, the sun is positioned as both muse and destroyer, both creative catalyst and source of human misery.

I hope you enjoy these passages, and treasure this selection of unbelievable texts as much as I have over the years.
